Rule #3: Know How to Style Yourself

For this blog post, I had the pleasure of interviewing Morgan Pitts. She is a current eCommerce associate at Gucci who aspires to be a creative director of a magazine or another kind of awesome brand. She also created an online community on instagram called “blackgirlswhoblog” that created a connection and sense of community amongst black women bloggers! Below she explained a couple of her styling tips that any woman can use to style herself!

  1. What inspires your choice of clothing on a day to day basis?

I can get inspiration from anywhere. A few weeks ago, I was flipping through the most recent J.Crew catalog and got outfit inspiration. I was excited to be able to recreate the look based on items that I already had in my closet. I also get outfit inspiration on the train going to and from work on a daily basis and the streets of New York City in general. Additionally, blogs serve as sources of inspiration for me as well. Last but not least, my style inspirations are: Solange Knowles, Shiona Turini, June Ambrose, Eva Chen, Jenna Lyons, Kahlana Barfield Brown Aimee Song and Aleali May (just to name a few). I’m always checking in on their latest looks or “style stalking.”

  1. What are some key pieces every woman should have in her closet?

I would say: little black dress, signature heel, quality pair of denim, statement coat, comfy/chic flat (ballet, sneaker, oxford, loafer, whatever) and spacious yet practical handbag that can go from day to night.

  1. How can a person use colors in her wardrobe to bring out their skin tone?

One can use color to bring out his/her complexion by trying on different hues and seeing what works. Opposites attract, so brighter hues really compliment darker skin tones, while rich, deep colors pop on more fair skin.

  1. What are some affordable ways to put together a cute outfit?

High/low style has really become a thing. A lot of stylish folks are mixing an investment (read: expensive) piece with basics or fast fashion retailers (e.g. Zara, H&M, Forever 21, etc). You don’t have to be wearing designer head-to-toe to be fly. In fact, some outfits that are totally designer are totally tacky because people lean on the labels to equate to style, and it just doesn’t. It’s all about color, cut, texture, silhouette and what you like/looks good on you; none of those things are exclusive to high fashion.

  1. What do you think is the biggest trend that people should follow for this fall season?

I hate to say “should” because I really believe in people doing what they want and love, but I can say that a few trends that I’m feeling this fall are: “furry feet” (or shoes with animal fur/pom poms), plaid prints and mellatic, pleated midi skirts.
