It is important for women to encourage other women at all times. Whether that be complimenting another woman’s outfit, personality, or ect. You never know how much it means to someone by saying something nice or encouraging. Remember that during this holiday season and for the coming of the New Year! For this blog post I had the pleasure of interviewing Logan Nelson, the current ambassador for Essence for the University of Maryland, College Park. She uses this platform, amongst many others, to encourage and inspire other women. Below are tips on ways to encourage other women and why it is so important!

  1. How do you personally encourage other women in your life?

I encourage other women in my life by complimenting them and recognizing their efforts. Even if it is the smallest thing, you never know what can turn someone’s day around. For my friends especially, I tell them when they are looking amazing even if they are dressed down on that day. I appreciate having friends who are beautiful inside out and that execute that in every way possible. For various projects that I see other women working on, I want to hear about it. Many people’s journeys go unrecognized, and I refuse to be a woman who does not encourage and push other women to be great and respect their own journey, as hard as it might be.

  1. How has being the ambassador for Essence help to reach out or uplift women?

Before Essence, I never saw myself as a role model to other girls. This platform has pushed my confidence, given me opportunities to speak into the lives of my peers and young girls, and has further reinforced my passion for women rights. Recently, I have been thinking about how I did not have mentor in high school. And I thought to myself that the young Black girls at my high school need that. So, I am in the works of creating a program for them to reconnect with us minority graduates. I think they will really appreciate this.

  1. Why is it important that women uplift one another?

Often times, we as women are pinned up against each other as competition. I never understood this. I appreciate those who start organizations focused on helping us women to connect. We are stronger as a unit. Standing alone and refusing to collaborate and be apart of a support system for other women is quite selfish in my eyes. There are so many benefits that come from it, both professionally and personally.

  1. What are some day to day things any woman can do to encourage another woman?

There are plenty of things women can do, but I think it is as simple as being there. Be present. Encourage one another to love every facet of yourselves. That includes the good and the bad because at the end of the day, those qualities are what makes you to be the strong woman that you are.

  1. What was your last compliment, such as on your outfit or on your appearance, from another woman and how did it encourage you?

The last compliment I received was from another woman is that I am very genuine and authentic. And that made me very happy because I always try to be. I appreciate authenticity in any relationships that I take on. I genuinely care about others, want to see others succeed and do well for themselves, and be the person they want to be.
